Your New Favorite Mascaras

Nothing gives eyes ultimate pop like a coat — or five — of a good mascara.

Darkening and thickening lashes is a great way to bring attention to your eyes. What’s also great is that amping up your lash line doesn’t feel “makeup-y”. It’s more architectural than say, eyeshadow or blush. The big question is which of the zillions of mascaras is best for you. Here are my favorites:

Best Drugstore Brand

Whether you’re on a budget or just like being able to grab a tube of your fave around the corner, 24/7 this one is for you:

Voluminous Mascara in Blackest Black I LOVE this brand. Gwenyth Paltrow turned me on to it in the early 2000’s and it’s been a mainstay in my kit since. The key to it’s success is that it’s very buildable and lasts all day.

My tip: Let the coats dry a touch between coats. Not just a few seconds. I apply a coat then do some eyeshadow then apply the next coat. You’ll get a fuller lash line this way.

Best Department Store Brand

Feeling fancy and want your mascara to have pure pedigree?

Lancôme Définicils Defining and Lengthening Mascara in Deep Black The key to it’s success is the oh-so-moist formula. It finds every lash and brings it front and center. This is a fave of Lisa Kudrow. We use her personal one when we glam for shoots.

My tip: Curl your lashes before applying mascara AND after it has dried. Curling just a touch right at the root after applying mascara gives uber lift and opens up the eye. Be gentle. Once there is mascara on the lashes they will take the curl very quickly. Just a light squeeze on the curler is all you’ll need.

Best Vegan/Cruelty Free Brand

If cleanest ingredients available is important to you try this eco friendly powerhouse:

Thrive Liquid Lash Mascara in Brynn (Rich Black) This formula uses ‘tubing’ technology. This type of finish wards off flaking and gives a tidal wave of length. Pretty lashes and healthy planet! I use this on Sarah Silverman to give her flutter that wide eyed look we love!

My tip: To thicken lashes try this: After applying one coat allow to dry. Dust face powder over lashes and then apply your second coat. The powder gives a little grip and texture to lashes and amps up any mascara formula.

Okay, now you’re ready to give 2021 that “come hither” glance with the fullest fringe around!

Enjoy pretty.
