In Our Own Write

A creative writing workshop for LGBTQ+ elders (ages 50+)

Join writer Erik Schuckers from the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Creativity for this FREE virtual nine-week workshop.

Through readings, guided writing prompts, and workshop discussions, learn how to share your experiences through poetry and short nonfiction.

We’ll meet twice a week via the free Zoom platform to explore writing from memory, family and community, the body, and more, all from our unique perspectives as LGBT elders. We’ll read and discuss contemporary LGBT pieces, write and share our own original work, and have the chance to meet virtually with publishing LGBT writers.

At the end, you’ll be able to share what you create through a collective reading and a limited-edition chapbook to be distributed to all participants and archived in the University of Pittsburgh Library System.

This workshop is geared specifically toward those with little or no previous writing experience: beginners welcome! The only requirements for entry are that participants are age 50+ and identify as part of the LGBT+ community. Have access to a computer and the desire to explore creative writing and connect with our community.

There are no dates/times for meetings yet, as these will depend on the schedules of interested participants. We plan to begin with the first session by mid-February and wrap up in April.

For questions or to register, contact Erik Schuckers at schuckers@pitt.edu or (412) 439-2573.

“In Our Own Write” is made possible through the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Creativity and the Year of Engagement.
