Pittsburgh’s LGBTQ+ community will have some familiar faces on stage this Saturday, October 17, as hometown superstar Billy Porter and out Pennsylvania State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta join the lineup for the latest “No Kings” rally in Downtown Pittsburgh.

The event, billed as “No Kings: Vote Early Pittsburgh,” is scheduled to take place outside the City-County Building, with organizers proposing a rally followed by a march through Downtown.

Porter, Kenyatta, and former U.S. Rep. Conor Lamb are among the featured speakers, according to reporting by Sonya M. Meadows for the Pittsburgh Progress.

For Pittsburgh’s queer community, the event brings together two prominent LGBTQ+ public figures whose careers have intersected with advocacy, representation, and political engagement.

Before he became an Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award-winning performer, Billy Porter was a Pittsburgh kid with big dreams.

A graduate of Pittsburgh’s CAPA and Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Drama, Porter has built a career that extends well beyond Broadway and Hollywood.

The Pose star has long used his platform to speak about racism, LGBTQ+ equality, artistic freedom, and the importance of queer visibility.

Earlier this year, Porter participated in the Artists United for Our Freedoms rally near Washington, D.C.’s Kennedy Center, where he connected artistic expression with broader concerns about government power and freedom of speech.

His appearance Saturday marks another opportunity for Pittsburgh audiences to hear from one of the city’s most recognizable queer cultural figures.

Joining Porter is Pennsylvania State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, one of the state’s most prominent out LGBTQ+ elected officials.

Kenyatta, who represents a Philadelphia-area district, has frequently spoken about LGBTQ+ representation in government and the importance of participation in the political process.

His presence alongside Porter puts queer voices prominently within a broader coalition of elected officials, artists, activists, and community organizations.

The rally is being promoted by Indivisible Pittsburgh alongside numerous community partners, including TransYOUniting and the Steel City Stonewall Democrats.

Other participating organizations include Casa San José, Common Cause, Common Defense, Progress PA, the League of Women Voters of Greater Pittsburgh, and the Coalition of Labor Union Women.

The coalition reflects the range of communities and issues represented at the event, including LGBTQ+ rights, immigrant advocacy, labor organizing, and voting access.

Unlike previous No Kings demonstrations, Saturday’s event is being organized around voter participation ahead of Pennsylvania’s November general election.

National organizers have branded the October 17 actions “No Kings: Vote Early,” encouraging eligible voters to learn about registration, mail-in ballots, and ways to participate in the election.

The Pittsburgh event will take place at the City-County Building at 414 Grant Street from 12 to 4 p.m. Saturday.
