Venture Outdoors, a nonprofit known for breaking down barriers to outdoor recreation, has announced Ash Andrews (they/them) as its new President and CEO. Andrews brings a wealth of experience, community engagement, and a commitment to sustainability, taking over from outgoing President Valerie Hill Beichner.

The organization, which reviewed over 400 applications during its leadership search, is thrilled to welcome Andrews. Laura Kelly, Board Chair of Venture Outdoors, expressed her excitement about the new hire: “Ash brings a sense of belonging that aligns perfectly with our mission. We are confident that under Ash’s leadership, Venture Outdoors will continue to thrive and expand our reach.”

Andrews’ connection to Venture Outdoors goes back years, as they’ve served as a Volunteer Trip Leader, guiding hikes, bike rides, and kayaking excursions. Their previous role as Executive Director at Pittsburgh Center for Creative Reuse highlights their dedication to sustainability and community building.

“I am so excited to combine my love of the outdoors with my belief that active, engaged, and well-supported communities make a stronger region for all,” said Andrews. “Western Pennsylvania is a treasure trove of natural beauty, and it will be my privilege to work towards a future where all of us – no matter our background, abilities, or barriers – can uncover the joy and deep sense of belonging that the outdoors has in store for us.”

Originally from the Laurel Highlands, Andrews now resides in Pittsburgh with their partner and a collection of houseplants and pets. Their academic journey included the University of Pittsburgh and experiences in nature writing and filmmaking at Savannah College of Art and Design and Seton Hill University. In 2020, Andrews was named a 40 Under 40 awardee by Pittsburgh Magazine.

This leadership change comes at an exciting time for Venture Outdoors as they complete the Kayak Pittsburgh Downtown Community Hub, a floating classroom and concession hub aimed at making kayaking and other outdoor activities more accessible. Andrews’ vision and leadership are expected to bring new energy and inclusivity to these efforts.
