August always feels a little different.
Summer isn’t over, but you can feel it beginning to shift. There are still long evenings ahead, neighborhood events to discover, and plenty of reasons to gather with friends. It’s a season that reminds us to enjoy where we are while looking forward to what’s next.
That’s what I love about this week’s stories. One celebrates a tradition that’s been bringing people together for more than three decades. Another celebrates a brand-new space that’s just beginning its own story.
Both remind us of something important. Queer community isn’t something we inherited. It’s something every generation continues to build.
Welcome to another Monday of celebrating the people, places, and moments that make queer Pittsburgh extraordinary.

SLAY OF THE WEEK: Pittsburgh Black Pride
This week’s Slay of the Week goes to Pittsburgh Black Pride.
For 31 years, Pittsburgh Black Pride has been creating a space where Black LGBTQ+ people are celebrated, affirmed, and surrounded by community. That’s an incredible legacy and one that’s still growing.
What began as a gathering has become a tradition that brings together generations of LGBTQ+ people for fellowship, celebration, culture, wellness, advocacy, and joy. Every year, it reminds us that Pride isn’t one-size-fits-all. Our community is strongest when every story, every identity, and every voice has room to shine.
This year’s celebration continued that tradition with three days of events designed to uplift, connect, and celebrate Black queer life in all its brilliance.
Thank you to the organizers, volunteers, performers, community partners, and everyone who has helped Pittsburgh Black Pride thrive for more than three decades. Your work has created a home for so many, and your impact reaches far beyond a single weekend.
Here’s to 31 years of joy, resilience, and community.
Now that’s a slay.

Queer Joy in the World: A New Place to Gather
Some of the most important community spaces don’t ask you to buy a drink. They simply invite you to stay awhile.
That’s why we’re celebrating Nightshade Lounge, Pittsburgh’s newest queer community space in Dormont. Open late into the evening, Nightshade offers something our region has been missing for years: an alcohol-free place where LGBTQ+ people can gather, relax, create, study, read, access resources, or simply exist in community after most other spaces have closed for the night.
Inspired in part by the beloved Beehive, Nightshade is also a food pantry, clothing closet, resource hub, and welcoming space run by volunteers who believe everyone deserves somewhere to belong whether they’re sober, neurodivergent, short on cash, or just looking for a quiet place to land.
We often talk about the importance of queer spaces, but Nightshade Lounge reminds us that not every queer gathering place has to revolve around alcohol. Sometimes the greatest gift a community can offer is a comfortable chair, a warm cup of tea, and the simple invitation to come as you are.
Here’s to the spaces that make room for all of us.
As we turn the calendar to August, it’s impossible not to feel grateful for the people who keep building our community.
Some are carrying on traditions that have lasted for decades. Others are opening new doors, creating new spaces, and imagining what queer Pittsburgh can become next. Every one of those efforts matters.
This week’s stories remind us that community isn’t measured by the size of a crowd or the length of a history. It’s measured by the people who decide to make room for someone else, to create a welcoming space, to lend a hand, or simply to say, “You belong here.”
