Queer Americans Hit Hardest by Covid-19 Shutdowns

The Human Rights Campaign released a report this week showing that LGBTQ people were 30% more likely to have lost their jobs this year because of the Covid-19 pandemic and related shutdowns. LGBTQ employees were also 20% more likely to have their working hours reduced than their straight counter parts. This figure skyrockets to 44% among queer people of color.

“As some communities start to go back to work … we’re seeing that LGBTQ people, especially LGBTQ people of color and transgender people, are being left behind,” said HRC President Alphonso David.

“The data continues to reinforce what we already know – that the economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic is not over because the pandemic is not over, especially for communities who were already marginalized in this country.”
