Podcast: From Newsroom to Nightlife with DJ ROJO

From reporting the news to running the dance floor, Royce Jones shares his journey into Pittsburgh queer nightlife as DJ ROJO.

What happens when a journalist trades breaking news for packed dance floors and late-night DJ sets?

In the latest episode of the QBurgh Podcast, host Jeff Freedman sits down with Royce Jones, known throughout Pittsburgh nightlife as DJ ROJO, for a candid conversation about creativity, reinvention, queer community, and finding joy in unexpected places.

Today’s Episode is sponsored by: Brianna’s Mobile Workshop! Pittsburgh’s Premier Queer Contractors.

Before becoming a recognizable name in Pittsburgh’s LGBTQ nightlife scene, Royce built a career in journalism and media. In this episode, he reflects on that transition and how music ultimately became another form of storytelling, one rooted in energy, connection, and creating spaces where people can fully be themselves.

Jeff and Royce discuss the evolution of queer nightlife in Pittsburgh, the importance of LGBTQ gathering spaces, and how nightlife can become a source of liberation, healing, and community-building. Royce also shares personal stories about stepping into the DJ world, balancing public and creative identities, and discovering the confidence to reinvent himself.

For longtime Pittsburghers, the episode captures a snapshot of how queer nightlife continues to evolve. For younger listeners and creatives, it’s a reminder that identities and careers do not have to stay fixed — and that sometimes the path toward authenticity begins with simply saying yes to something new.
