Mayes Sworn in as Pennsylvania’s First Out Lesbian State Representative

At noon today in Harrisburg, La’Tasha Mayes (D – Morningside) was sworn in as State Representative for Pennsylvania State House District 24 which includes parts of the Pittsburgh neighborhoods of the Hill District, Oakland, Bloomfield, Morningside, Highland Park, East Liberty, and Homewood. Mayes is the first out lesbian to serve in the Pennsylvania General Assembly.

Mayes joins State Representative Jessica Benham (D – South Side), Pennsylvania’s first openly bisexual state representative, in a growing number of LGBTQ people to be elected to the Pennsylvania State Legislature.

Also from Allegheny County, State Representative Arvind Venkat (D – McCandless) is the first Indian American State Representative.
