Today is Giving Tuesday, a day of global generosity towards the people and organizations that are working to make the world a better place. While you should think globally, act locally this Giving Tuesday by supporting the great work of the many LGBTQ Community organizations and non-profits in the Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania region. Here’s how:
TransYouniting
TransYOUniting is a trans based non-profit resource organization that provides educational programs for trans folks and allies. As transgender & non-binary community leaders, advocates & allies, they are equipped with more than 60+ years of lived experience to help transgender, non-binary and gender expansive people thrive
Proud Haven
Proud Haven’s mission is to provide a safe shelter for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) youth experiencing homelessness and housing instability. They also provide emotional support and resources to help LGBTQ+ youth develop needed skills.
This year, Proud Haven partnered with Trans Youniting and Trans Pride Pittsburgh to launch Pittsburgh Youth Haven to provide further support to the TLGBQIA+ community.
True T PGH
True T PGH celebrates Queer People of Color through Creative Art, Entertainment, Community Resource Sharing, and Activism.
Hugh Lane Wellness Foundation
Since March, Hugh Lane Wellness Foundation has provided 2500 individual meals and 1000 care package deliveries of groceries and household products and will continue to provide these weekly deliveries through 2021. For Thanksgiving, they served 550 individuals to ensure everyone had food.
For LGBTQ+ youth who are isolated at home with families who may be struggling with their identity, the Foundation offers virtual support groups and 1-1 support. So far, they’ve assisted 70 parents and 30 youth.
Queer Family Planning Project
This nonprofit was created to help LGBTQ folx start their own families after the founders faced numerous obstacles while trying to have their second child. From trying to avoid unnecessary testing, to the COSTS of everything all of this entails, it became frustrating and disheartening for them. No one should have to jump through the hoops that are in place just to have a child. The Queer Family Planning Project is here to help alleviate some of these costs.
PGH Equality Center
The PGH Equality Center began in 1979 as a phone line. The Center branched out to being a community center and advocacy group. Through the years, the Center has hosted youth programming, the 2nd largest LGBTQIA+ focused library, OUTrageous Bingo, and more. In 2020 many PGH Equality Center programs have gone virtual.
Allies for Health + Wellbeing
Allies for Health + Wellbeing (formerly the Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force) provides integrated care and support for individuals living with or at risk of HIV , HCV & STIs.
This year Allies’ leadership and board are matching every gift up to $20,000 donated on Giving Tuesday!
Brave Heart United
Brave Heart United, Inc., provides LGBTQ young adults with safe housing, access to mental health, legal counsel, and healthcare services by providers who specialize in the treatment and needs specific to them. In addition, the “Brave Hearts” enrolled in this program, work closely with a trained professional to create a flexible blueprint of their short-term goals and aspirations in order to fulfill their long-term dreams.
Washington County Gay Straight Alliance
The Washington County Gay Straight Alliance, Inc. is a 501 (C) (3) Organization that facilitates and provides resources for a peer group of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Transsexual, Questioning, Queer, Asexual, and Allied (LGBTQA) youth. The organization also hosts 2nd Friday Nights Potluck, a monthly social gathering for the LGBTQA community of all ages.
Persad Center
The Persad Center provides counseling, training & prevention services for the LGBTQ communities and people living with HIV.
Every dollar given until midnight up to $5,000 will be matched by their Board of Directors.
