Faces & Places: World AIDS Day 2022 Memorial Service Reflects on Over 40 Years

Hosted by AIDS Free Pittsburgh, Allies for Health + Wellbeing, Central Outreach Wellness Center, the Jewish Healthcare Foundation, Pitt Men’s Study, QBurgh, Reel Q, and Shepherd Wellness Community hosted the World AIDS Day memorial service on December 1.

The first mention of the coming HIV/AIDS epidemic by any Pittsburgh news media was in the October 1981 issue of Pittsburgh’s Out, Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania’s LGBTQ newspaper at the time. By May 1983 the epidemic had arrived in Pittsburgh. HIV and AIDS would not be covered by local stations or newspapers until 1986 — by then it was far too late.

At a time when so much feels uncertain, supporting QBurgh is an act of resistance. It’s a way to ensure that, no matter what happens in 2025, Pittsburgh’s LGBTQIA+ community will not be silenced. It’s a way to say, loud and clear, that our stories matter. Link in bio or QBurgh.com/give
