Let Freedom Sing — Celebrating Social Justice in Song

January 15 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The 17th annual Let Freedom Sing concert celebrates the social justice legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with The Heritage Gospel Chorale and MLK Festival Choir, directed by Dr. Herbert Jones and Nikki Porter with vocal soloist Anqwenique. Dr. Alton Merrell will also be featured in a solo piano performance of a gospel classic.

The concert features vocal and instrumental music, and spoken word performance. The concert concludes with a performance by the intergenerational MLK Festival Choir backed up by a jazz trio.

Attendees are also encouraged to bring a food item to donate to the East End Cooperative Ministry Food Pantry.

Prior to the concert, Let Freedom Sing hosts inclusive, intergenerational, and all-gender events including a luncheon, a vocal workshop, and a festival choir rehearsal on Saturday, January 13, 2024. Participants of all backgrounds are welcome.

After the luncheon at 12:30pm, singer Anqwenique leads a 45-minute vocal workshop, fostering joy and freedom in singing from 1:30pm. From 2:30 to 5:30 pm, Dr. Herbert Jones and Nikki Porter guide participants in a rehearsal of four to five choral arrangements by African-American composers rooted in the movement for racial justice. For venue information and event details on the luncheon, vocal workshop, and festival choir rehearsal, please visit Let Freedom Sing‘s website.

Those engaged in the workshop have the option to perform the song set as the MLK Festival Choir in the Let Freedom Sing Concert.
