STI TESTING, TREATMENT AND PREP
If you’re sexually active, staying on top of your sexual health is crucial.
Your first step is to get tested. Many sexually transmitted infections do not have noticeable symptoms but can cause serious harm, so it’s important to get tested on a regular basis. When you get tested at Allies, you’ll get results for HIV, hepatitis C and syphilis in about 20 minutes – no need to get bloodwork somewhere else. You’ll meet with an Allies provider at your testing visit, so if you test positive, you can learn about your treatment options and start treatment right away.
It takes a little longer – a week at most – to get results for gonorrhea and chlamydia, but Allies offers treatment for those infections as well.
Regardless of your test results, Allies staff can talk with you about your options for protecting yourself and your partners from STIs. For those who do not have an HIV diagnosis, PrEP – pre-exposure prophylaxis – is a daily pill or periodic injection that is highly effective at preventing HIV. At your testing visit, you can talk to our team about whether PrEP is right for you.
HIV CARE AND SUPPORTIVE SERVICES
An HIV diagnosis today is not the death sentence that it once was, and with proper treatment, people can live long and full lives with HIV. Allies clinic team is highly trained in HIV specialty care – it’s been our primary focus since 1985. Our medical professionals can talk with you about the best ways to manage your HIV and how you can achieve viral suppression. When a person regularly takes their HIV medication and stays on top of their care, the HIV virus can become undetectable in a standard lab test. This is viral suppression, and though it is not a cure for HIV, a person with viral suppression cannot transmit HIV through sexual activity.
But an HIV diagnosis can be overwhelming, and Allies is here to help. People living with HIV within the 11 counties of southwest Pennsylvania may be eligible for case management at Allies for Health + Wellbeing.
Our case management program gives people with HIV access to transportation and housing assistance, emergency financial assistance, food assistance – including visits to Allies’ onsite food pantry, legal services and so much more. Allies case managers are dedicated to helping clients live their fullest and best lives possible while getting the HIV treatment they need.
ONSITE PHARMACY
Allies Pharmacy is located in our office in East Liberty so you can get your medication at your convenience. Our pharmacist is specially trained in the medications most used by our patients, including those for PrEP, HIV and hepatitis C. Our pharmacy team works directly with our clinic staff to make sure you’re getting the meds that will work best for you.
If you’re visiting Allies for a PrEP visit, primary care visit or testing, there’s no need to make a separate trip to the pharmacy. You can get your prescriptions filled at Allies Pharmacy while you’re receiving other services from our staff. If it’s more convenient, we also can mail your prescriptions to you.
Plus, when you use Allies Pharmacy, you’re helping others access quality and inclusive healthcare. All proceeds from Allies Pharmacy go directly to the programs and services offered by Allies for Health + Wellbeing.
