The Beach

The Playground that is St. Barts

Small roads, smaller cars and the smallest bathing suits you’ve ever seen (if there are bathing suits at all). And this is only the beginning of what you will see during a visit to St. Barts, an island nestled in the French West Indies, a few miles and a 10-minute-orso flight from St. Martin. Villas comprise 95 percent of the island, along with a handful of small and very posh resorts. St. Barts is what Robin Leach from Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous would call a “playground” — which sounds like a plan to me.

The island is French, and the food is fabulous. Mornings consist of a croissant, coffee, fresh fruit, and the crucial mimosa. Each part of the island features a beach that boasts views not only of the ocean, but also of yachts and catamarans anchored specifically to take in all that each beach has to offer. Saline, Gouverneur, and St. Jean are a few of the best beaches that St. Barts
has to offer. These are the only way to experience the island when the sun is up.

When the sun goes down, St. Barts offers cuisine and nightlife that rivals most any destination worldwide. Gustavia is the town where the vast majority of entertainment occurs and its harbor acts as a parking lot for yachts for the rich and famous. The bar to beat is Baz Bar. It is small, the drinks are sensational, and the servers are knock down gorgeous.

I can say with confidence that if I were forced to choose one location to vacation every day for
the rest of my life, it would be St. Barts. Should you plan a trip, your list of things to pack should
include all of your best bathing suits, your hottest sunglasses and jewelry, and outfits that will
take you from dinner to drinks with the potential of running into someone from the pages of US
Weekly. Of course, on this island, you’re likely to be photographed with them.
