Pittsburgh Black Pride commemorates 27 years with a series of events which includes a concert with Mýa. The celebration kicks off at 5801 on Thursday, July 28, with the concert at the August Wilson Center on Friday, July 29 and culminates in a Community BBQ and Vendor Fair on Saturday, July 30 in Schenley Park.
Andre Brown, Ph. D, MPH, the president of Pittsburgh Black Pride, said, “We think Mýa was the perfect choice. She has cross-generational appeal. Everyone will recognize her music.”
Mýa, the singer, songwriter, dancer and actress, catapulted to fame in 2001 when she collaborated with Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, P!nk and Missy Elliot on a remake of LaBelle’s “Lady Marmalade,” which was featured in Baz Luhrman’s “Moulin Rouge.”
Brown added, “She’s a strong ally.”
Brown is focused on bringing more events to Pittsburgh. The Pittsburgh Black Pride president moved here from Flint, Michigan, after earning several degrees at the University of North Carolina. Brown has become an advocate for the City and the Community. He said, “We want to bring more consistent events to the community, monthly panels, HIV awareness, etc.”
He added, “We are stronger together.”
Since 1995, the Pittsburgh Black Pride Association has provided entertainment, social information, and health education to Black LGBTQIA individuals and families in the City of Pittsburgh and across Southwest Pennsylvania.
Brown is looking forward to the concert, but he is equally excited for everyone to come out to the Community BBQ and Vendor Fair. “We have over 30 vendors, including health providers, music, food and games.”

Brown said, “Everything but the concert is free and open to the public.” He added, “It’s a great opportunity to get out and have some fun!”

On Friday, Mýa will perform at the August Wilson Center, 980 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15222 with a After Party at P Town Bar, 4740 Baum Boulevard, Pittsburgh 15213. On Saturday, the Community Barbeque and Vendor Fair will be at Schenley Park’s Prospect Shelter at the corner of Prospect Drive and Hobart Street.
