Happy Halloween week, Pittsburgh! 🎃👻
The costumes are coming out, the drag is getting delightfully dramatic, and somewhere in this city, somebody is already planning a Halloween look that requires a structural engineer.
But before we dive headfirst into spooky season, we’ve got something else to celebrate. Queer people taking up space.
On the ice. Behind the microphone. In conversations about our community’s future.
Belonging is about knowing the room is yours, too. It’s about being celebrated for who you are, having a voice in what happens next, and making sure the people coming after you know they’re welcome.
This week, we’re celebrating a Pride Night victory that was literally a shutout, an opportunity for Pennsylvania’s drag performers to make their voices heard, and a couple of important dates worth circling on your calendar.
The message? We’re not just showing up. We’re making our presence known.
Now, let’s get into the good stuff and slay the week!
SLAY OF THE WEEK: The Penguins Put Pride on the Ice and Won Big!

The Pittsburgh Penguins’ annual Pride Game on Thursday was already a win for queer visibility before the puck even dropped.
With Pittsburgh LGBTQ+ Hockey in the spotlight at PPG Paints Arena, the evening celebrated LGBTQ+ players and fans who are helping make hockey a place where everyone belongs.
And then the Penguins decided to make the night even sweeter.
A 4–0 shutout against the Florida Panthers!
The Pens stopped all 26 shots and snapped a four-game losing streak. That’s one way to celebrate Pride.
But the best part wasn’t on the scoreboard. Through a special ticket offer, $10 from each qualifying ticket went to Pittsburgh LGBTQ+ Hockey, and group members were invited onto the ice for a postgame Shot on Goal experience.
For a sport that hasn’t always made LGBTQ+ people feel welcome, seeing queer hockey players and fans celebrated on one of Pittsburgh’s biggest sports stages matters.
The ice was cold. The welcome was warm. And the Panthers went home without a goal.
Now that’s a slay.
DON’T LET YOUR BALLOT GHOST YOU!
Halloween is for spooky surprises. Election deadlines? Not so much.
If you’re voting by mail in Pennsylvania’s November 3 election, there are two important deadlines coming up:
Tuesday, October 27, by 5 p.m. Your application for a mail-in or absentee ballot must be received by your county election office.
Tuesday, November 3, by 8 p.m. Your completed mail ballot must be received by your county election office.
Important: A November 3 postmark is NOT enough. Your completed ballot needs to arrive by the deadline.
Need to find your county election office? Pennsylvania has made voter information easy over at Vote.PA.gov.
Make a plan, check those dates, and give your ballot plenty of time to get where it needs to go.

Queer Joy in the World: Pennsylvania’s Drag Performers Have the Floor

Drag performers know a thing or two about commanding a room. But this November, Pennsylvania is making space for them to be heard in a different way.
Governor Josh Shapiro’s Advisory Commission on LGBTQ Affairs is hosting a free, virtual Drag Community Listening Session on Wednesday, November 18, from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
The invitation is open to drag artists across the commonwealth, from seasoned queens and kings to performers just finding their footing in their first pair of platforms.
On the agenda? Conversations about performer safety, resources for Pride events, better communication about gigs and opportunities, and ways to build stronger connections across Pennsylvania’s drag community.
The session isn’t about handing performers a prewritten plan. It’s about listening to what they actually need.
The people creating queer culture should have a say in how that culture is supported.
The spotlight is great. A seat at the table? Even better.
Take Up Space. Make Some Noise.
This week’s stories are a reminder that queer joy isn’t confined to any one place. It belongs in hockey arenas, where LGBTQ+ fans can cheer for their team and see their community celebrated. It belongs in conversations where drag performers can speak openly about what they need and what they want to build.
And it belongs in all the everyday places where we make decisions, share stories, and help shape the communities we call home.
So as you head into Halloween week, here’s your invitation. Be visible. Be vocal. Be wonderfully, unapologetically yourself.
Wear the outfit. Cheer too loudly. Tell someone their costume is incredible. Make room for another person to shine.
And remember, you don’t have to wait for someone to hand you a place in the world. You belong here already.
Have a spooky, sparkly, joy-filled week, Pittsburgh.
Stay queer. Stay loud. Keep slaying.
With love and a little Halloween mischief,
Talk soon.
