The City Is About to Be… A Lot

Okay Pittsburgh. This is your official warning. The NFL Draft is coming.

Hundreds of thousands of people. Downtown chaos. Traffic that will test your patience, your GPS, and your will to live.

Some of you are excited. Some of you are already planning outfits. Some of you are absolutely going to wander down there just to “see the vibe.”

And some of you? Already planning your avoidance strategy like it’s a military operation.

And honestly? Both are valid.

Because here’s the thing, this week is about energy. The city is going to be loud, busy, unpredictable. And you get to decide how you meet that moment.

You can lean in, stay out, dip in for one drink and immediately leave, or fully disappear into your neighborhood like a queer cryptid. No wrong answers.

Just remember that the city is alive right now. And whether you’re in the middle of it or watching from a safe distance, you are part of this amazing city.

SLAY OF THE WEEK: Bright Young People Take the Floor

This week’s Slay of the Week goes to the Bright Young People Dance Party and the changemakers it celebrated.

On Friday night, Velum Fermentation filled with music, movement, and community as Allies for Health + Wellbeing hosted its annual celebration honoring the 2026 class of Bright Young People.

With DJs spinning and the dance floor alive, it was a reminder that the future of Pittsburgh is being shaped right now by artists, advocates, healthcare workers, organizers, and creators who are showing up for their communities in real ways.

Twelve honorees. Countless contributions. One very full dance floor.

The slay is who’s building what comes next and taking a moment to celebrate it together.

QUEER JOY IN THE WORLD: Esai Aliquo Finds Her Sound

There’s something special happening in Pittsburgh’s music scene, and it sounds like legacy.

Trans artist Esai Aliquo is stepping into her voice with her debut EP, Inherited Groove, a project that brings together three generations of jazz, original songwriting, and a whole lot of love.

With her grandfather, Pittsburgh jazz legend Don Aliquo, her mentor Phat Man Dee, and a full creative community behind her, it’s a celebration of family, biological, musical, and chosen.

Blending classic jazz standards with original work, Esai’s debut is about becoming. And doing it surrounded by people who see you, support you, and help you shine.

Queer Recommendation: A Night at the Disco

If you’ve ever felt something shift on a dance floor, this one’s for you.

In A Night at the Disco, writer Christian John Wikane dives into the sounds, artists, and underground club scenes that shaped the 1970s and the queer communities that made it all matter.

It’s a reminder that for so many LGBTQ+ people, the club was freedom, connection, and a place to exist without fear.

A space where the music decided everything. Where strangers became community. And where entire careers and cultures were born.

Christian John Wikane will be at Stay Gold Books on Saturday, May 9, for his “A Night at the Disco” Book Tour.

Alright. Here we go.

This week, the city is going to be a lot. More people. More noise. More energy than usual.

And in the middle of all that? You still get to choose your pace. You can lean into the chaos, opt out completely, or find your own version of the weekend somewhere in between

Because while the crowds come and go, community stays.

The people you text. The spaces you return to. The version of yourself you’re building, slowly and intentionally. That’s the real center of everything.

So whether you’re downtown in the middle of it all, or safely tucked away watching from afar—

Stay hydrated. Stay grounded. Stay a little bit chaotic. And take care of yourself and each other.

Talk soon.
