Opinion: Vote Maria McLaughlin for Supreme Court

On November 2nd, voters across Pennsylvania have the opportunity to elect new judges, county executives, mayors, school board members, and dozens of other local officials. It’s going to be a crowded ballot, but one race stands out.

Who we choose to serve on our highest court can have serious repercussions for issues like gerrymandering, gender discrimination, and voting rights. The stakes of this election could not be higher for the LGBTQ community, and the choice is clear. We must elect Maria McLaughlin as our next Supreme Court Justice.

Maria is running because she believes in the values of equality and democracy. If she wins, the Supreme Court will have its first-ever female majority in Pennsylvania’s 300-year history. Maria has been endorsed by the Steel City Stonewall Democrats and dozens of LGBTQ advocacy organizations, community leaders, and out elected officials across the Commonwealth. Meanwhile, her Republican opponent has aligned himself with critics of civil rights cases like Obergefell v Hodges – the decision that legalized same-sex marriage nationally.

Love has always been at the heart of Maria’s judicial philosophy. She’s the only candidate in this race who will protect the constitutional rights of all Pennsylvanians – regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity. I know she’ll be a principled, experienced, and compassionate Supreme Court Justice.
I hope you’ll join me in voting for Maria McLaughin on November 2nd and urge your friends, family, and neighbors to do the same. When LGBTQ voters and our allies show up, our entire community wins.
