Nearly three years after the tragic murder of Angel Naira, a transgender woman from Aliquippa, justice was served as Darnese Raines was found guilty of first-degree murder. The verdict was delivered on Wednesday, bringing some closure to a case that has deeply impacted the local LGBTQ+ community.
Angel, who was well-known and loved by friends, was found in an Aliquippa apartment in November 2021. Naira was a proud trans woman who had embraced her identity. Throughout the trial, Angel’s life and identity were honored as testimony revealed the horrific details of her death. The murder was a violent act that underscores the dangers transgender individuals face, especially trans women of color.
On Tuesday, District Attorney Nate Bible emphasized the critical role of DNA evidence in the case. Raines’ DNA was found on Angel and on several items at the scene, which became key to securing the conviction. The jury found Raines guilty based on this evidence, ensuring accountability for the brutal act of violence.
While Raines’ sentencing has yet to be scheduled, the LGBTQ+ community continues to mourn the loss of Angel and reflect on the broader issue of violence against transgender people.
“It’s essential that we continue to honor Angel Naira and those like her, whose lives were tragically taken. We saw a significant step toward justice, as the man responsible for Angel’s death in 2021 has been found guilty of first-degree murder. This is a powerful reminder that violence against the trans community cannot go unanswered. The trial revealed horrifying details about how Angel was taken from us, but we will keep pushing to ensure no more lives are lost,” read a statement issued by Trans Youniting.
As we await the sentencing, advocates are calling for continued efforts to address the root causes of anti-trans violence and to create safer, more inclusive communities where everyone can live authentically and without fear.
