Resilient, Vibrant, Unbreakable

State Representative Jessica Benham.

Pride has always been both a celebration and a declaration of joy, of resistance, and of our collective commitment to each other. This year, that dual purpose feels especially urgent. Across the country, LGBTQ+ people are facing an unprecedented wave of attacks on our rights, dignity, and ability to live openly and safely. It would be easy to feel overwhelmed by the scale of it all, but here in Pennsylvania we are choosing a different path rooted in courage, community, and progress.

As a queer woman and co-chair of the PA Legislative Equality Caucus, I am proud of the ways we are fighting to move our Commonwealth forward. Again this session, we have passed legislation through the PA House to protect marriage equality, because no matter what happens at the federal level or in the courts, love should remain the law of the land in Pennsylvania. We are also continuing to push for the Fairness Act, long-overdue legislation that would finally enshrine comprehensive nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ+ Pennsylvanians in employment, housing, and public accommodations. The Fairness Act, alongside bills prohibiting the LGBTQ+ Panic Defense, reforming name change procedures, decriminalizing HIV, and fighting back against hate crimes, passed out of the House Judiciary Committee this session, and we are working to get these bills a vote on the House floor.

This progress and these efforts are not happening in a vacuum. They are the result of decades of advocacy, organizing, and care from people who showed up, spoke out, and refused to be erased. Pride is built on that legacy, and it is sustained by what we do next. In difficult times, it can be tempting to retreat, but Pride calls us to do the opposite: to show up more boldly, to care for one another more deeply, and to fight more fiercely for a future where everyone can thrive. Our joy, our love, and our visibility are powerful forms of resistance, and we are part of a community that is resilient, vibrant, and unbreakable.

Happy Pride!
