PFLAG Pittsburgh Announces Leadership Transition

New officers announced as organization continues focus on support, education, and advocacy.

PFLAG Pittsburgh is entering a new chapter of leadership following the departure of longtime board president David West.

In a statement released February 18, the organization shared that West recently stepped down after serving six years as president and nine years as a member of the board. The group expressed gratitude for his years of service and leadership during a period that saw both growth and ongoing challenges for LGBTQIA+ communities locally and nationally.

Stepping into leadership is Interim President Patti Rice, joined by Treasurer Christa McClusky and Secretary Anastasia Walker. The organization did not indicate how long the interim appointment will remain in place.

PFLAG Pittsburgh is the local chapter of PFLAG National, the country’s largest organization dedicated to supporting, educating, and advocating for LGBTQ+ people and their families. Founded in 1972 by Jeanne Manford, a New York City schoolteacher who began publicly supporting her gay son at a time of intense social stigma, PFLAG has grown into a nationwide network of chapters committed to building a more affirming world for LGBTQ+ individuals and those who love them.

Locally, PFLAG Pittsburgh centers its work on three pillars: support, education, and advocacy. The organization hosts monthly in-person and virtual support meetings for parents, grandparents, allies, and LGBTQIA+ individuals seeking connection and guidance. Volunteers also participate in community tabling events and speaking engagements, working to promote acceptance in families, schools, workplaces, and faith communities across the region.

In addition, the chapter collaborates with other local organizations to advocate for policies and resources aimed at helping LGBTQIA+ people lead safe and healthy lives.
