Isn’t love a drag?
Thankfully, in Pittsburgh, it is. In this — the most romantic of months — we are celebrating our city’s big-hearted (big-lipped, big-haired, and boldly beautiful) drag scene!
We are thrilled to feature Alaska Thunderf*ck on our cover. She is Pittsburgh’s second competitor on RuPaul’s Drag Race, and if her outstanding talent, incredible beauty, and show-stopping shock are any indication, we’re confident that our queen will bring us home another championship.
Our outstanding team rallied with the geniuses at Bill Chisnell Productions for the cover and the feature on page 34. It was a herculean effort, fitting of Alaska’s celebrity. See the epic assembly and all of the riotous behind-the-scenes shots on page 38.
We’re also excited that Priscilla Queen of the Desert is coming to Pittsburgh in the PNC Broadway Series. We think it speaks volumes of the diversity, love, and openness of our city to feature a show that so gallantly walks the line between drag and Broadway (our favorites!). Don’t miss Stacey Federoff’s preview on page 24.
It’s also Oscar season (finally), and Tiff Waskowicz gave us one of her famous breakdowns of “gay moments” on page 30 (you’re gonna love it), and of course we’re celebrating that heart-shaped holiday with a rant from Jared Pascoe on page 39, a fitness column about how more exercise equals better sex on page 36, and a chocolate cupcake recipe that’s proven to be an aphrodisiac on page 40.
Finally, I leave you with my own love letter. I have loved standing at the helm of this project for its launch (and for the Pride Magazines that preceded it). This is the community that fostered my coming-out, so of course, I am biased — but I would put Pittsburgh up against any city in the world for its friendliness, its big ideas, its passion, its talent, and its innovation. You — as a loving and inclusive group — have built a space for people to literally follow their dreams. Here, in our rose-colored, rainbow flag-waving city, we can be whomever we want. And tomorrow, we can be even better than we were today.
My heart swells to pass the baton of Editor in Chief to my friend, Joe King. Joe brings with him magazine experience, but more importantly — he has a special gift for not only highlighting local celebrities, but inventing them! I’m confident that future issues will be filled to the brim with new faces and inspiring stories, endowed with the flair, endorsement, and promotion that comes with the Joe King brand.
