I am one of the few people who has never seen “The Princess Bride.” I’ve seen parts of it. I remember André the Giant being in it. The movie came out when I was 9 years old, a time when I was very much into WWF wrestling. But I have never sat down and watched the movie all the way through. I’m not, like, against it. I just have never felt compelled to watch it.
When I tell people this, they are often appalled. As if I had just told them that I’d never in my life seen a single movie.
But I’ve seen lots of movies, three of my favorite being “Stand By Me” (the image of the dead body still haunts me to this day), “Misery” (I have been calling people “dirty birdy” since 1990) and “This is Spinal Tap” (which I did not see when it came out, but did finally watch a few years ago. Looking forward to the sequel). All movies directed by Rob Reiner.
He was still directing movies until the day he died, which was the day that I am writing this. He and his wife were stabbed to death, and one of their sons has been taken into custody.
Even if you didn’t know anything about Rob Reiner, a story about a man stabbing his parents to death is truly horrible. Most people would respond to such a story with something like, “Oh my god” or “that’s terrible” or “holy shit.”
But the President of the United States is not most people. Not even close.
See, Reiner was very outspoken against Trump. In 2017, he told Variety, “Donald Trump is the single most unqualified human being to ever assume the presidency of the United States. He is mentally unfit. Not only does he not understand how government works, he has no interest in trying to find out how it works.”
No lies detected. And despite being president once before, Trump still does not understand or care to understand how government works.
During the 2024 presidential race, Reiner posted on X, “We either can choose a good decent man who cares about his fellow citizens and knows how to govern, or a Convicted Felon who will destroy our Democracy,”
Alas, we made the wrong choice.
Anyway, I know that Trump is a notoriously thin-skinned little bitch baby incapable of empathy. But even I was taken aback by what Trump posted about Reiner.
“A very sad thing happened last night in Hollywood,” Trump posted. “Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.”
Now, this was posted before the son was in custody, but it is absolutely wild to basically say, “This guy I don’t like is dead because he was so mean to me that one of my supporters killed him.”
The post goes on to say that Reiner’s hate for him only grew as he made America greater and greater.
Trump ends the post with, “May Rob and Michele rest in peace!”
According to ABC, when asked later if he stood by the post, Trump doubled down. “He became like a deranged person,” he told the reporter. “Trump derangement syndrome. So, I was not a fan of Rob Reiner at all in any way, shape or form. I thought he was very bad for our country.”
I know that this is obvious to any sentient human being, but my god, the president is a deeply sick person. Not a single redeeming quality. Truly a walking museum of the worst traits a person can have.
Reiner, on the other hand, seems like he was a good guy. He was definitely an LGBTQ+ rights advocate.
“Reiner’s greatest contribution to the LGBTQ+ community was as cofounder of the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which funded the legal fight against Proposition 8, the California ballot measure that revoked marriage equality in the state,” reports The Advocate. “In 2008, the California Supreme Court ruled for marriage equality, but Prop. 8, approved by voters that November, amended the state constitution and therefore nullified that ruling.”
Two same-sex couples sued over Prop. 8 and it was The American Foundation for Equal Rights who hired the lawyers that argued the case.
Long story short, Prop. 8 lost and that helped clear the way for the Supreme Court to rule in favor of marriage equality in 2015. A time when the Supreme Court was not stacked with fascists.
It’s no wonder why Trump hates Reiner: People loved him. Trump will never know what actual love feels like and won’t be remembered fondly by anyone. But part of Trump’s legacy will now be that he lost his shit when Rob Reiner was murdered. A very stable genius, indeed.
