State Representative La’Tasha D. Mayes (D) officially launched her re-election campaign Thursday evening with a community event in East Liberty, outlining a continued vision centered on economic opportunity, support for working families, and the protection of fundamental freedoms.

The event drew a crowd of supporters, elected officials, and community leaders. Among the featured speakers were Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis and Pennsylvania Democratic Party Chair Eugene DePasquale, both of whom praised Mayes’ leadership and record of delivering results in Harrisburg.

“This campaign is about fighting for real solutions—affordable childcare, good-paying jobs, healthcare, and support for small businesses and non-profit organizations,” Mayes said in a statement. “It’s about protecting our freedoms and building a future where every family in our community thrives.”

First elected in 2022, Mayes made history as the first out lesbian to serve in the Pennsylvania General Assembly. She has since built a legislative profile focused on paid family leave, maternal health equity, small business investment, and expanding access to essential healthcare services. Mayes currently represents the 24th Legislative District, which includes parts of Pittsburgh, Wilkinsburg, and surrounding neighborhoods.

Mayes’ campaign messaging, centered around “Families, Freedom, and Our Future,” positions her as a candidate focused on practical, people-first policies at a time when economic pressures are mounting for working Pennsylvanians.

“Our economy should work for moms juggling careers and caregiving, for workers trying to stretch every paycheck, and for small business owners who are the backbone of Pittsburgh,” she said.

Lieutenant Governor Davis called Mayes a “powerful advocate” and credited her with advancing equity-driven policies. “Rep. Mayes understands what it takes to move Pennsylvania forward,” Davis said. “She delivers for workers, moms, and families, and I’m proud to support her re-election.”

DePasquale echoed that sentiment, emphasizing Mayes’ principled approach and commitment to her district. “Representative Mayes is exactly the kind of bold, principled leader our Commonwealth needs,” he said.

As one of only a few openly LGBTQ+ state legislators in Pennsylvania, Mayes’ presence in the General Assembly is significant for representation and advancing equity-driven legislation. Her campaign emphasizes the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, class, and the policies that arise from those lived experiences.
