“The roof is on, and the windows are going in.” President and CEO of Presbyterian SeniorCare Network James Pieffer is excited about his work on Mosaic, the Oakland neighborhood’s new senior housing facility for the LGBTQ+ community.
That 48-unit building near the corner of Forbes and Craft is set to open in mid-October 2025.
The Mosaic Apartments’ affordable housing development ceremonially broke ground in May 2024 in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh. The apartment complex is specifically marketed to LGBTQ+ seniors with a strong emphasis on inclusivity and community support. The complex will address the unique needs of LGBTQ+ adults aged 62 and older by fostering a sense of community and belonging. Rent will be determined by income.
Pieffer said, “The Housing Authority has been a great partner on this project. They secured 32 housing vouchers for Mosaic.”
The apartment complex will have on-site parking, 24-hour emergency maintenance, and a community room. It will even be pet-friendly, with a dog washing station. The location will provide easy access to both essential services and cultural activities. The development is in the heart of a diverse neighborhood home to multiple universities. Several world-class hospitals and museums, libraries, and multiple music and performance venues are within blocks of the development. There is easy access to downtown, Southside, and other neighborhoods for seniors.
Pieffer said, “We are creating a welcoming environment.” He added, “We are working to make the programming and hold health clinics that are sensitive to the needs of the community.”
More than $28 million has been raised for this initiative, supported by nine major funding sources, including $4 million in low-income housing tax credits from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania through the PA Housing Finance Agency. UPMC, the University of Pittsburgh, and Dialysis Clinic, Inc. donated the use of the land for this development via no-rent 75-year land leases, which have helped ensure the project’s long-term affordability.
Pieffer said, “We’re grateful to all the collaboration we’ve gotten on Mosaic. The donated land, the generosity of UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh, and our partners at Huntington Bank.”
Pieffer specifically mentioned Pennsylvania, Ohio Valley, and Mahoning Valley Regional President of Huntington Bank Susie Shipley in his acknowledgments.
Presbyterian SeniorCare Network will hold an informational session for the property on April 22 at Goodwill, 160 52nd Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15201, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. QBurgh will announce additional informational sessions as they become available.
