Just days after what was thought to be its final night, Gossip, the only LGBTQ+ bar in Uniontown, is making one last effort to keep its doors open.
Following an emotional farewell on Saturday, January 17, which saw more than 200 patrons return to the bar to celebrate its impact, co-owners Ryan Marshall and Kyle Norman have launched a GoFundMe campaign in response to overwhelming community support urging them to try again.
“We heard you,” the GoFundMe reads. “And we are making one final effort to stabilize the business and continue serving the community.”
Gossip first announced its closure earlier in January, citing unsustainable financial pressure from rising costs in utilities, inventory, insurance, and other operational expenses, paired with reduced consumer spending. Despite efforts to adapt, the owners said the financial gap had grown too large to continue without additional help.
Now, with an offer from their landlord to keep the space and the community rallying behind them, Gossip is asking for donations to cover outstanding bills, restock supplies, and invest in structural changes that would support the bar’s long-term sustainability.
“All funds will be managed by Mama Morgan,” the campaign states, “and we are committed to transparency.” Updates will be provided so donors can track how contributions are used.
In addition to the online fundraiser, Gossip will host an in-person fundraiser and community town hall on Saturday, January 24. Doors open at 6:00 p.m., and a community discussion, led by Dillon Spencer, National Director of Community Fundraising for Relay for Life, will begin at 7:00 p.m.
“This is a chance to hear directly from the people who made Gossip what it is,” the announcement reads. “What you want, need, and expect from Gossip moving forward.”
The bar’s appeal comes at a time when queer venues across the country, particularly in rural areas, are facing mounting challenges. For many in Fayette County and beyond, Gossip has offered more than nightlife; it’s been a community space in a region where LGBTQ+ gathering spaces are few and far between.
“If Gossip has ever been a place you enjoyed, relied on, or valued as a safe community space, please consider donating and sharing this fundraiser,” the campaign urges. “Every contribution, no matter the size, helps us bridge the gap and gives this business a real chance to continue.”
