ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power), founded in 1987, is a diverse, non-partisan collective of individuals dedicated to direct action to combat the AIDS crisis. Focused on HIV/AIDS and closely-related issues, ACT UP members lead efforts against social injustices affecting those living with HIV/AIDS and at risk of infection.
Since its inception, ACT UP has employed diverse direct action tactics to tackle social inequities threatening affected communities locally and globally. ACT UP Pittsburgh operates under a broader mission to end the AIDS crisis within the framework of addressing health disparities rooted in inequality and injustice.
ACT UP Pittsburgh currently meets every Sunday night and resists the traditional hierarchies and bureaucracies of other organizations. All ACT UP members are leaders.
