This iteration will be a State of the Union edition, with specific space held for the upcoming General Election on November 4th, with a focus on the swath of political pushback on TLGBIA+ lives.
Title: The Queer Quarterly: State of the Union Edition
When: 10/14, 6-9 pm
Where: 460 Melwood Ave
Description: The United States of America is divided. There is a huge resistance to Queer existence. The General Election is coming up. It’s time that the queer community come together, discuss our state of the union, and take inventory, so we know just where we stand in relation to the powers that try to be.
“The Queer Quarterly is a facet of 1Hood’s Civic Engagement umbrella in the name of the Pittsburgh Kiki Wave, a set of comprehensive programming put forth to reduce harm, encourage community ties, spur creative expression, and introduce civic engagement to the conversation for our queer communities so affected by our politicized identities. Given where Pittsburgh sits within the US and Presidential election, it’s important for folx to understand how local, regional, and national elections impact their lives. Every year there has been more anti-LGBTQ legislation than the last. Pennsylvania, a battleground state, ranks third among states with the most banned books, many of them touching on topics that often touch on our identities, but are deemed “controversial.” The Queer Quarterly brings the community together to discuss these looming threats and its ability to push back and thrive in the midst of it, using the different meetings to touch on different issue areas including but not limited to banned books, surviving academia, and the political elections.”
