This workshop examines how perceptions of Black queer people—both in life and in literature—are shaped and distorted by stereotypes. We’ll explore how queerness is often seen before Blackness, and how both identities face rejection in different spaces. Through a reading from My Name Is Malcolm, we’ll challenge harmful mindsets, discuss why authentic and complex queer characters matter, and learn how to create fearless Black queer characters who push back against systems designed to erase them.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to identify common stereotypes about the Black queer community, analyze their impact on representation, and develop strategies to create strong, multidimensional queer characters.

About the facilitator: Orion Asa (he/him) is a queer Black poet and Navy veteran originally from New Castle, PA, now based in Pittsburgh’s East End. After decades of living a life that didn’t reflect his true self, including years in what he calls a “mental prison,” he found healing through meditation, therapy, and the rediscovery of poetry after a 30-year break. Orion’s work challenges stereotypes, confronts systemic oppression, and invites readers to reimagine what it truly means to be human. Guided by a belief that the greatest human achievement is the ability to give and receive love, he writes to help others embrace their authentic selves and pursue the dreams within them. Orion is also the founder of The H.E.A.R.T. Center, located in Wilkinsburg, where healing and art practices come together to serve the community. Orion is also one of Write Pittsburgh’s Write Spark Emerging Writers-in-Residence!
