The Big Gay River Float returned Sunday for a third year of queer river joy. Around 150 LGBTQ+ and ally adventurers grabbed their tubes and hit the Youghiogheny River. Starting at Smithton Beach and winding their way to Cedar Creek Park, floaters soaked up the sun, danced on the water, and built a spontaneous flotilla of laughter, community, and unapologetic queer joy. This free, DIY event is all about showing up, showing out, and floating forward, and this year’s snapshots, taken by the floaters themselves, capture every splash, smile, and sparkly speedo.
The Big Gay River Float began as a way to bring our diverse LGBTQ+ community together in a fun, family-friendly setting that celebrates who we are while enjoying the beauty of our local rivers. Organizer Dennis Myers wanted to create a space that is inclusive, safe, and welcoming for everyone, no matter age, background, or identity. Just as importantly, Myers wanted it to be affordable and accessible, so that everyone has the opportunity to show up, connect, and feel like they truly belong.
