Life is a Cattybaret, old chum!

Hosts Catty Wampus and Brayden Butter are serving looks and food at the Cattybaret, a monthly catered cabaret event at the Blue Moon in Lawrenceville. It’s one hour of Pittsburgh’s finest acts, including drag, singing, burlesque, and comedy.

Catty Wampus, who burst on the drag scene in 2022, wanted to fill an empty slot on Sunday nights at the Blue Moon. The performer wanted to highlight the best of what Pittsburgh had to offer. Catty Wampus tapped Brayden Butter to join her as an emcee for the event.

Brayden said, “I felt underqualified to host the show,” but Catty Wampus saw something in the fledgling new drag artist.

Brayden Butter began their drag career on March 1, 2024, at Brewers. Brayden said, “First time I got up, I got to lip synch in a redemption round and beat Lydia B Kollins.” Brayden Butter tossed a quick aside, laughing, “She’s gonna be so mad that I keep bringing that up.”

The Cattybaret features a variety of genres: disco, do-wop, Big Band, and Vaudeville. “Any Pre-80s music,” Brayden said.

The duo is focused on presenting quality entertainment. Catty Wampus said, “One of my favorite shows was our Christmas show. We had a burlesque performer named Dirty ChaCha. She was an amazing performer and an amazing person!”

Brayden Butter added, “We had Luna Skye show up and sing one night. I’ve seen her lip synch a lot, but I had no idea she had such a beautiful singing voice. We also had Chi Chi De Virve, who wrote and sang a parody of ‘The Wizard and I’ about [alleged] killer Luigi Mangione.”

Other significant guests included Cherri Baum, Dixie Surewood, and Alora Chatueax.

Catty Wampus and Brayden Butter are hoping to lure Tootsie Snyder out of retirement, but Catty Wampus said, “We have the show booked for the rest of the year.”

Brayden Butter turned to Catty Wampus and said, “We are? That’s great!”

Wampus and Butter are proud of the work they’ve done to support local charities and hold fundraisers for various community partners. Brayden said, “We would love to raise money for Shepherd Wellness Community. It’s such a great organization that does so much for so many.”

“My favorite part of the show is my Yap Session with Brayden. We chat about a variety of subjects,” Wampus said.

Cher inspired the Yap Session at her concerts, where she holds a 10-minute Storytime. Catty Wampus said, “Not only does it give the audience insight into our lives, but I think it helps create a welcoming environment.”

Angel Rosen, who has attended nearly every Cattybaret, says the show has created some of her most meaningful memories.

“The first Cattybaret was also my mom’s first drag show,” Rosen said. “That early show meant that I could bring my mom into my world for an evening. It was really special to introduce her to my friends and queer family.”

Rosen emphasized how the show continues to build connections across the community. “The Cattybaret brings a variety of performers for both the Blue Moon regulars, my found family, and new people passing through to enjoy and experience. I met someone at Cattybaret who became a friend that I will have for a lifetime.”

She added that the early evening format opens doors for more people to experience drag. “I think an early evening drag show brings a taste of queer nightlife to people who maybe can’t go to midnight drag shows, which brings in new faces.”

“We start at seven, and we are done before eight. It’s the perfect show for a Sunday night,” Brayden Butter said.

Brayden gave a heartfelt shout-out to the team’s graphic designer, Colin Hunter. “He creates such wonderful posters for the show. We need to make sure we mention him!”

The $5 cover includes a dinner served at 6 pm. The evening’s offerings also include desserts from local community partner Evanlybakes, who provides sweets for each Cattybaret and vends before and after the show. The May show will feature Gay Fieri and C’Yasia.

Cattybaret runs every month at the Blue Moon, 5115 Butler Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15201. Additional details can be found on Catty Wampus and Brayden Butter’s social media.
