Summary

The October 1982 issue of Out magazine covers:

Local Pittsburgh News

  • Double Murder: The community was shocked by the murders of David Fields, 17, and Kim Loring Rodgers, 27, whose bodies were found with slashed throats on a Northside riverbank. Police identified “gay overtones” based on Fields’ personal adornment (painted fingernails, false nail). Homicide detectives believe both were killed at the same site, having been knocked unconscious before the slashing. No suspects or motive had been established at press time, and police sought leads from the gay community.
  • AIDS Research: Dr. Stephen Fisher was planning a year-long “prospective study” in Pittsburgh on Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), an immune deficiency disproportionately affecting gay men. He was seeking 300 volunteers for initial and follow-up visits to establish a victim profile and monitor Sexually Transmitted Diseases.
  • Steel City Softball League (SCSL): The Mill Hunks were declared the League’s first champion after the executive committee decided the season officially ended on August 31, abiding by by-laws and circumventing a playoff interruption caused by lights unexpectedly going out.

National/International News & Features

  • Azygos Fragrance: A new designer cologne, “Azygos,” conceived for gay men, launched its marketing efforts, banking on the gay community’s tight-knit nature, high disposable income, and trend-setting reputation. Coach House was identified as the retail outlet in Pittsburgh.
  • Gay Games: The first Gay Athletic Games (originally the Gay Olympic Games) concluded in San Francisco, featuring over 2,000 athletes and drawing approximately 15,000 spectators for the closing ceremonies.
  • Former L.A. Dodger Goes Public: Glenn Burke, a former major league baseball player, became the first to openly discuss his gay life, suggesting his career ended due to bias after the Dodgers traded him.
  • Political Action: The Gay Rights National Lobby (GRNL) and Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund issued a joint statement to clarify that the current version of the “Family Protection Act” does not cut off individual federal benefits but could impact funding for gay social service agencies.
  • Salvation Army Controversy: Chicago Knight Motorcycle Club’s $1,400 donation was refused by the Salvation Army, which cited apprehension over the club using their name in fundraising and a misunderstood request for information on youth programs. The gay community demanded a written apology.
  • Fairness Doctrine: The editorial warned that the broadcast industry, supported by the Reagan-appointed FCC, was trying to repeal the Fairness Doctrine, which gay groups had previously used to gain media access and respond to anti-gay broadcasts.
