Summary

Out magazine’s September 1982 issue (Number 66), covers:

Pittsburgh Focus:

  • Political Action: A voter registration drive is underway, urging Allegheny County residents to register by October 4th to vote in the November 2nd election.
  • Bar/Club Issues:
    • State Senator Stewart Greenleaf (R-Willow Grove) is plotting legislation to increase fines for liquor code violations and transfer LCB enforcement to the state police, a move expected to disproportionately affect gay bars.
    • The planned reopening of Casino Royale/Follies at 807 Liberty Ave. was thwarted by Judge Nicholas Papadakos’s order on August 13, despite a prior ruling that his initial injunction was invalid. The management plans to appeal.
  • Housing: The City of Pittsburgh’s Neighborhood Housing Program (NHP) director stated that gay couples may qualify as a “family” for subsidized housing, a situation never previously encountered by the URA.
  • Arts/Community: Three Rivers Arts Festival director John Jay announced his resignation by October 1, stating it was his decision and unrelated to media attention about a quote he gave to Out.
  • Community Groups: Operation-PEG (Pittsburgh’s Elderly Gay) is being formed as a support group for elder gay/lesbian people, patterned after New York’s SAGE, Inc.

National News:

  • AIDS Epidemic (Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome):
    • Federal funding for research, including Kaposi’s sarcoma, is set to increase in fiscal 1983.
    • A total of 485 cases had been diagnosed in the U.S. as of July 1982, with a 71% mortality rate for 1981 cases. Three cases, resulting in one death, have been reported in Pittsburgh.
    • The CDC is working with the National Hemophilia Foundation on data collection due to reports of three hemophilia patients contracting pneumocystis carinii pneumonia.
  • Civil Rights:
    • Philadelphia passed a gay rights ordinance on August 5, prohibiting discrimination based on “sexual orientation” in employment, housing, and public accommodations.
    • The Gay Rights National Lobby (GRNL) and the National Gay Task Force (NGTF) were admitted to the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights.
    • A Federal district judge in Dallas struck down a Texas law prohibiting homosexual conduct, extending the right to privacy to gay and lesbian citizens.
