Summary

The August 1982 issue of Out magazine (Number 65), covers:

Local:

  • Political: Pittsburgh Congressman Bill Coyne co-sponsored the national gay rights bill, H.R. 1454, which was seen as a surprise and a boost to local activists [6].
  • Police Activity: Increased police activity in the “Dithridge” section of Oakland led the ACLU’s Committee for Lesbian and Gay Equality to leaflet the area, advising gay men of their rights and responsibilities [6].
  • Business Profile: Miles Douglas Galleries, co-owned by Miles Bausch and Douglas Lucas, opened in Allegheny West (908 Galveston Ave.), specializing in collectibles [3].
  • Softball: The Steel City Softball League (SCSL) All-Stars competed in the “Canada Cup ’82” tournament in Toronto, achieving a shutout against New York and losing two games by only one point. The league’s July meeting addressed funding needs [7].
  • Religion: Rev. Joseph Houle, pastor of the Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) of Pittsburgh since October 1978, announced his resignation effective August 31, 1982, to pursue further education [10].
  • Events: The Gay Olympic Torch Run, the “Flame Chain,” passed through Pittsburgh on June 23-24 en route to San Francisco for the August 22 start of the Gay Olympics [12].

National/International Topics:

  • Health: The Hepatitis-B vaccine, Heptavax-B, became available, but the cost ($100 for three injections plus screening) raised concerns about who would pay. Gays are identified as a high-risk population, and information on coverage under various insurance plans and public assistance was provided [8].
  • Legal: A federal district judge in San Francisco ruled the INS policy of excluding homosexual non-citizens unconstitutional [10]. In New York, an appellate court reversed a lower court’s denial, allowing a same-sex lover to adopt his mate [12].
  • Labor: The American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), a union of 1.1 million public employees, overwhelmingly passed a resolution supporting gay civil rights legislation [12].
  • Democratic Party: Gay rights leaders formed the National Association of Gay and Lesbian Democratic Clubs in Philadelphia and successfully lobbied for gay rights amendments to the Democratic Party’s statement on “goals and principles” [11].
  • Arson/Support: The editorial notes that the offices of Boston’s Gay Community News were destroyed by fire, and appeals for support, drawing a parallel to the fire that destroyed Out‘s former offices in 1980 [4].
