The October 1977 issue of Gay Life Pittsburgh features:

  • “Mr. Pittsburgh 1978” Contest: Preliminary competitions are being held at the Cinema Follies Club on October 28, 29, and 30, with the finals on October 31. Winners of the preliminaries receive $50, and the “Mr. Pittsburgh” winner gets an additional $100. Judging is based on casual attire, swimsuit, and poise/personality.
  • “Will the Real Ken Curley Please Sit Down”: Pittsburgh’s only live gay theater is presenting this show on October 7 and 8 at 11:30 pm, and October 9 at 10:15 pm at the Home Circle Club. It stars Ken Curley, Kevin Bossolono, Joyce Lewis, Gorman Lowe, and Gay Life editor Ron Vollmer.
  • Halloween Parties: Several establishments are hosting Halloween events:
    • 2001’s “Cherchez La Femme Cabaret”: Hosting a Halloween Disco Party on Saturday, October 30, featuring costume judging and the rising of “Disco Dracula.”
    • David’s of Steubenville: Hosting its Halloween Party on Saturday, October 29, including costume judging and the crowning of “Miss David 1978.”
    • Norreh Social Club: Hosting a Halloween Party on Thursday, October 27, with costume judging at midnight.
    • House of Tilden: Hosting a Halloween Party on Sunday, October 30, with costume judging and photo opportunities.
    • Outpost II (Youngstown, OH): Hosting a Halloween Party on Saturday, October 29, with a $5 cover for food and drink.
    • Scorpion Lounge (State College, PA): Hosting a Halloween Party on Saturday, October 29.
    • Home Circle Club: Hosting a Halloween Party with costume judging and a buffet on Saturday, October 29, starting at 9 pm.
  • Andrea True Connection Concert: The Andrea True Connection will be performing at 2001’s Cherchez La Femme Cabaret on Saturday, October 15, with two shows, a six-piece band, and dancers. Admission is $4.50 in advance or $5 at the door.
  • RAGE (Rapid Action for Gay Equality) Rip-off: RAGE members collecting signatures for a gay rights petition had it stolen by three white males in Shadyside on September 17. The petition contained names and addresses of supporters.
  • RAGE Rape Alert: RAGE issued an alert after a young homosexual male was raped in Pittsburgh’s Point Park over Labor Day weekend. They encourage reporting such incidents to the Rape Crisis Center, police, or Persad Center.
  • “25¢ Movies” Robberies: Several reports of strong-arm robberies have occurred at “25¢ Movies” on 8th and Liberty in downtown Pittsburgh since September 15, with gay male victims reporting up to five straight men forcing their way into private viewing booths and demanding money. Attendants were reported to have witnessed the robberies and “looked the other way.”
  • Support for Gay Rights:
    • The National Gay Task Force (NGTF) has declared Friday, October 14, as National Gay Blue Jeans Day to raise awareness about discrimination.
    • The firm Berlin, Boas, Issacson, Logan, Rosenfield, and Sharon (Pittsburgh) offers legal services with experience in all areas of gay rights.
    • The Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches founder, Rev. Troy D. Perry, is fasting to raise $100,000 to fight the Briggs initiative, which aims to ban homosexuals from teaching in California schools.
    • A boycott of Adolph Coors Co. beer, supported by gay activists, has reportedly led to a decline in their market share.
    • Actress Liv Ullmann and Jane Fonda have spoken out against Anita Bryant’s intolerance, and Mae West crowned a gay Mr. America.
    • The San Francisco Board of Education is considering adding studies of gay lifestyles to its sex education curriculum.
    • The University of Michigan student body voted in favor of gay rights on campus.
    • A new book, Now What? by Bill Hutchinson, offers support and understanding for parents of gay children.
  • Local Business Updates:
    • The Holiday bar is undergoing renovations from October 4-8 and will reopen on October 10 with a new rustic/western interior.
    • The Club Baths of Pittsburgh has a new 4-foot diameter super TV screen and plans for a new whirlpool bath next spring.
    • The Norreh Social Club is holding a Christmas season fund-raising drive for the Home for the Aged, with a Carnival on November 17.
    • J&J Sales & Service, a sewing machine and small appliance store, has opened next door to David’s Lounge in Steubenville, OH.
  • Advertisements: The issue contains numerous advertisements for gay bars, clubs, baths, and businesses in Pittsburgh and surrounding areas, including Venture Inn, Club Baths, Schume’s Liberty Baths, Arena Baths, Male Stop, Boulevard Books, and the Cinema Follies Club.

The issue also includes a “Ripoff” list of businesses and individuals that Gay Life Pittsburgh recommends readers not support due to dishonest dealings with the gay community.
