Summary

This issue of Gay Life Pittsburgh from May 1977 includes a variety of local and national news, advertisements, and community listings:

  • “Stop Anita” Campaign: The cover and several articles focus on efforts to counter Anita Bryant’s anti-gay referendum in Dade County, Miami. Gay Life is collecting 25 cents per copy this month to donate to the Dade County Coalition, aiming to raise $500. Readers are urged to send donations to the Dade County Coalition (P.O. Box 414, Miami, FL 33133) as this is seen as a crucial battle for gay rights that could affect other cities if Bryant is successful.
  • New Ownership for Cinema Follies Club: The former Penthouse Theatre, briefly known as “Big Apple Top,” has been purchased by a group of gay businessmen from Baltimore and Washington, becoming the “Cinema Follies Club.” The new owners are making changes to improve the club for its clientele, including becoming a private club, offering “in-and-out” privileges, and providing free continental breakfast from 2-5 AM. The transition involved a dispute with the union, leading to picketing and counter-picketing.
  • The House of Tilden Renovation: The “landmark” House of Tilden has completed remodeling, with a new “goodie room” (formerly the gameroom) and a new gameroom where the kitchen once was. A unique discovery was made during the renovation: original oak paneling from the Mellon mansion, installed in 1911.
  • New Gay Disco Concept: John Neptune and the 2001 Club are launching “Cherchez La Femme Cabaret,” a BYOB disco concept every Saturday night starting June 11. The grand opening on June 11 will offer free admission. The venue boasts the city’s largest disco floor, cruise bars, a fruit and juice bar, a gameroom, and a lounge.
  • Suburban Gay Bar: CJ’s Phase II, a new full-service gay lounge, has opened in Penn Hills at 4257 Verona Rd., next to a Dairy Queen. It will be open seven days a week, offering happy hours, a live DJ on weekends, and free spaghetti dinners on Thursdays.
  • Male Stop Relocation: The Male Stop Bookstore has moved to a larger location on the fourth floor at 138 Ninth St. downtown, offering expanded selections, 25-cent peep shows, and a private lounge.
  • Political News: State Senator Thomas Nolan (D-Wilkins), known for his homophobic stance and attempts to outlaw hiring gays and tax advertising, is reportedly being edged out of his position as Senate majority leader.
  • Regular Features: The issue also includes a “What’s Happening” section with a calendar of events and listings of bars, clubs, baths, and community organizations. Advertisements for various businesses, including “Satan’s Scent” (a local amyl product), Taylor Topper hair replacements, and mail-order adult products, are also present.
