Pittsburgh Highlights:

  • The Home Circle Club (North Side): Features live cabaret revues, a Super Bowl party on January 15th, a new Machine Bowling League, Pool Tournament, and a Birthday Bonanza Club. Free membership cards are available until April Fool’s Day.
  • House of Tilden (East Liberty): Introduces a new revolving slide show lighting technique in its disco and will unveil a “Best of ’77 in review” slide show on New Year’s Eve.
  • Schume’s Liberty Baths (Downtown): Displaying its annual gay-themed Christmas exhibit through February. Tuesdays are $3 nights.
  • Venture Inn (Liberty Avenue): Hosting its annual Mardi Gras costume ball on Tuesday, February 7th.
  • Holiday Bar (Oakland): New kitchen is open, serving hot sandwiches, soup, and chili from 11 am to 1 am. Also hosting a Birthday Club for Capricorns on January 11th.
  • Cherchez La Femme Cabaret at 2001: Will be open two nights a week starting January 18th, with a special $1 disco on that Wednesday.
  • El Greco Lounge (Downtown): Features a long happy hour from 10 am to 9 pm.
  • Norreh Social Club (Polish Hill): Holding its annual January Membership Party on Thursday, January 19th, and a carnival benefiting MCC/Pittsburgh on Thursday, February 9th.
  • Club Baths of Pittsburgh (Fifth Avenue): Offering Dollar Nights on Monday and Wednesday, and movies on Tuesday and Thursday.
  • Pennsylvania Council for Sexual Minorities: Has open council slots and has established a Speaker’s Bureau. Governor Milton J. Shapp has also approved non-discrimination clauses in state agencies’ affirmative action plans to protect gay workers.
  • Rapid Action for Gay Equality (RAGE): Seeks community involvement, writings, and contributions to support gay rights.

Other Regional News:

  • Erie, PA: A second adult store, Filmore News, has opened. Plans are in the works to turn a resort hotel gay for the upcoming tourist season.
  • State College, PA: The Scorpion Lounge is celebrating its second anniversary on Saturday, January 28th, with a dinner buffet and disco.
  • Charleston, WV: The Greek Downstairs Club is undergoing remodeling for expansion and the Up Club is highlighted as a friendly and growing establishment. The Greek Downstairs Club, the Up Club, and the Strawberry Hut in Parkersburg, WV, and the Question Mark Lounge in Wheeling, WV are also mentioned as popular gay social venues.
  • National News: A lesbian press in Oakland, CA, Diana Press, was vandalized. Robert A. Martin Jr. is the first gay person to have his military discharge upgraded under President Carter’s review program. A Louis Harris survey indicates gay people are the most discriminated against minority group in the U.S. An IWY conference passed resolutions favoring lesbian rights. A nationwide pen-pal club for disabled gays is forming.

The issue also includes personal ad listings, a poem, and a “Bar Talk” column by Brian Michaels.
