Summary

The December 1982 issue of Out covers:

Featured Stories & News:

  • AIDS Epidemic: Local AIDS research is underway in Pittsburgh, headed by Dr. Stephen Fisher and Dr. Charles Rinaldo of the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health. They are seeking volunteers for testing and comparison. The mortality rate is approaching 50%, with 75% of the 691 reported cases as of October 28 being gay or bisexual men. There is concern that federal research funding may be cut despite the mounting deaths. (ARCHIVIST NOTE: This research study is what would become known as the Pitt Men’s Study)
  • Patrick Cowley’s Death: Disco star, producer, and arranger Patrick Cowley died on November 12, 1982, in San Francisco at age 32 from an AIDS-related disease. A memorial fund for AIDS research has been established in his honor.
  • Political Gains: Gay political action committees (PACs) saw significant victories in the November 1982 balloting, with the Human Rights Campaign Fund (HRCF) supporting 91 victorious candidates out of 113. Local Pittsburgh candidates endorsed by gay groups, including William J. Coyne and Frank Pistella, also won.
  • Police Raid: Police vice detectives raided the offices of Stars Magazine and the apartment of its associate publisher in Washington, DC, as part of an investigation into “child pornography,” seizing records and mailing lists.
  • NGTF Leadership: Virginia Apuzzo accepted the post as executive director of the National Gay Task Force (NGTF) and its fundraising arm, the Fund for Human Dignity, following the controversial resignation of Lucia Valeska.

Community & Culture:

  • Cover Profile: Pittsburgh actor Jeff Paul, who was starring as Lenny Bruce, is profiled.
  • Steel City Softball League (SCSL): The league concluded its first year with the Millhunks declared champions. New officers were elected, and fundraising events are being organized for the winter.
  • Gay Film Awards: Hollywood’s Gay Film Awards honored sensitive depictions of gays and lesbians, with a standing ovation for Robert Preston for his role in Victor/Victoria.
  • Pittsburgh’s First Community Awards: The first annual Lambda Awards balloting is planned for January 1983.
