Summary

The July 1982 issue of Out magazine covers:

Pittsburgh Local News:

  • Steel City Softball League (SCSL): The first annual ‘Turnpike Tourney’ was held over Memorial Day weekend, with Toronto’s Cougars winning. Pittsburgh’s teams included the Metros, Stingers, Privates, Rogues, and Mill Hunks. An all-star team of 18 Pittsburgh men and women is traveling to Toronto for the ‘Canada Cup’ from July 1–4. The SCSL meets monthly at the First Unitarian Church in Shadyside.
  • Golden Triangle Picnic: The Memorial Day picnic was canceled because the permit for North Park’s Lodge was not applied for in time. A Labor Day picnic is planned for the same location.
  • David Ayn Profile: Pittsburgh chef David Ayn (a/k/a Mother Russia) of the restaurant La Tache (located about 30 miles from Pittsburgh on Route 8) was interviewed. His past ventures include The Gaslight Club, The Fallen Angel, The Celestial, The Back Room, and the bar Mother Russia.
  • The Consequence Film: The German film about a man/boy relationship, The Consequence, was the best-attended film at the Three Rivers Arts Festival’s film festival, beating Man of Iron and Knightriders.

National and International News:

  • FBI Surveillance: Documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act confirmed the FBI, CIA, and military conducted “fugitive-style” surveillance of gay people and organizations from 1954 to at least 1978.
  • Politics/Legislation:
    • Congressman Tom Foglietta, a co-sponsor of the national gay civil rights bill (H.R. 1454), won a critical Philadelphia Democratic primary election, with the Human Rights Campaign Fund being his single biggest contributor.
    • Support for H.R. 1454 reached 54 co-sponsors, one short of the previous record high.
    • A lesbian, Pat Hill, won a $25,000 out-of-court settlement in a discrimination suit against Philadelphia’s Department of Recreation, which may set a Pennsylvania precedent.
  • Film Commentary: An analysis discussed the contrast between American films with gay themes (Victor/Victoria, Making Love) being “safe” or “lighthearted,” compared to German films (Taxi zum Klo, The Consequence) that confront the theme “on its own terms.”
  • German Filmmaker: Rainer Werner Fassbinder, the openly-gay German film director, died at age 37.
  • Pakistan: Gay life in Pakistan involves severe penalties, including being buried up to the chest and stoned to death.
