Summary

The June 1982 issue covers:

  • Steel City Softball League (SCSL): The league, formed earlier this year, includes five teams: Metros, Millhunks, Stingers, Rogues, and Privates. Games are played on Sundays at Gladstone Field in Hazelwood. The league is sending an all-star team to the Canada Cup tournament in Toronto in July and is planning its own annual Turnpike Tourney. Ron Herceg is the League Commissioner.
  • Shadyside Politics: Independent Democratic candidates, including openly gay activists Randal G. Forrester and Tom Gough, won election as Democratic Committee Man Members in the May 18 Primary despite “dirty tricks” used by the “regular” Democrats, including an anti-gay leaflet targeting Forrester. Richard Meritzer was also re-elected as Committee Man Member in Stanton Heights (10th Ward, 17th District).
  • Profile: An article profiles “Michael Flent,” one of Pittsburgh’s earliest gay activists (formerly known as Fred), who is now a successful freelance artist and porno star in New York City.
  • Commentary: A piece discusses the lack of support systems for a gay female couple’s marriage, especially since they live in different cities. Another column, “A disturbed peace” by Brian McNaught, addresses the accusation of “flaunting” a gay lifestyle, arguing it is often misinterpreted as celebrating honesty.

National & International News:

  • Immigration Law Victory: A federal judge in San Francisco ruled on April 22 that U.S. immigration officials can no longer bar gay visitors solely on the basis of their sexual orientation, ending a three-year legal battle initiated by British activist Carl Hill.
  • Census Data: The 1980 national census indicates 2.4 million people living as same-sex “roommates” or “partners” in formal relationships.
  • Nebraska Gay Rights: An amendment to the Lincoln, Nebraska human rights law that would have added “sexual orientation” was defeated by a margin of nearly four-to-one in the May 10 primary. Opponents used scare tactics, claiming gays should be banned from jobs such as “food handlers” or blood handlers.
  • Political Lobbying: The Gay Rights National Lobby (GRNL) is organizing constituents to lobby Congressional candidates for co-sponsorship of an amendment to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation.
  • Health: Two additional types of cancer—Burkitt’s lymphoma and squamous carcinoma of the tongue—with a high incidence in gay men were reported in San Francisco, potentially related to low disease resistance and multi-viral infections. A toxicologist called for a ban on butyl nitrite (“poppers”), which is suspected of suppressing the immune system.

Editorial and Departments:

  • The Outspoken editorial section encourages readers to “Be cunning, read between the lines” to find advertised special prices from bars and clubs that are legally restricted from explicit advertising by the Liquor Control Board.
  • The Outguide lists local Pittsburgh businesses and resources, including bars, baths, counseling, discos, and legal services.
