The film will be preceded by the Pennsylvania premiere of My Neighbor’s Yard\, which takes a similar lens to suburban Harrisburg in the months leading up to the 2024 presidential election. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with filmmakers from both documentaries. \nThe Bulldogs\n\nFollowing a catastrophic train derailment\, The Bulldogs follows the residents of a small rural community in East Palestine\, Ohio\, as they navigate an uncertain path to recovery. \nMy Neighbor’s Yard\nNeighbors from Pennsylvania’s divided capital region use signs\, flags\, and Halloween skeletons to turn their yards into opposing campaign endorsements leading up to the presidential election.\n\nThursday\, Sept. 24th\, 6:30 PM @ Point Park University\, George R. There\, he meets the workers who created humanity’s greatest weapon that now wrestle with their legacy\, while their grandchildren inherit a world on the brink of nuclear catastrophe.\n\nWater Cooler\n\nThe Trump administration has turned immigration courts into deportation traps. As ICE agents wait to arrest their targets outside of courtrooms\, their banal conversations clash with the severity of their actions. ​ This documentary short — filmed in New York’s Federal Plaza from November 2025 through January 2026 — captures the virulent callousness of ICE agents detaining migrants who are trying to stay in the country legally. \nHilda O. vs. The State of New York\n\nAt 15 years old\, Hilda Onley was sexually abused at the NY State Training School for Girls\, where she was incarcerated in 1958. A homecoming of a film set in Pennsylvania’s Pennhurst Asylum\, this can’t-miss film takes an honest look into the complicated history of the notorious former institution\, its challenging history\, and the disabled actors who now help transform the space into one of the state’s most well known haunted houses. \nA filmmaker Q&A will follow the screening. This screening will be captioned and ADA accessible. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Haunting of Pennhurst\nAn institution for disabled people\, notorious for decades of abuse\, was finally shuttered in 1987—only to reopen 30 years later as a haunted house attraction. DESCRIPTION:The Backyard Docs Film Festival is excited to screen the Pittsburgh Premiere of a new restoration of one of the most impactful Appalachian documentaries of our lifetime\, Harlan County\, USA\, as our closing film! The award-winning film from 1976 offers an unflinching look into a grueling coal miners’ strike in a small Kentucky town. Today\, 50 years later\, this gorgeously restored film offers not just a look back in time but also serves as a powerful reminder of the strength of and need for organized labor and unions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nHarlan County\, U.S.A.\nThis film documents the coal miners’ strike against the Brookside Mine of the Eastover Mining Company in Harlan County\, Kentucky\, in June\, 1973. Eastover’s refusal to sign a contract (when the miners joined with the United Mine Workers of America) led to the strike\, which lasted more than a year and included violent battles between gun-toting company thugs/scabs and the picketing miners and their supportive womenfolk. \nDirector Barbara Kopple puts the strike into perspective by giving us some background on the historical plight of the miners and some history of the UMWA.
