When you look back on your history classes, did you ever wonder who and what was missing?
Who wasn’t in your textbook? Imagine if you had learned about the LGBTQ heroes who shaped our world—figures like Josephine Baker, the legendary entertainer who risked her life as a spy in the French Resistance during World War II, or Pauli Murray, whose work influenced the civil rights movement and expanded legal protection for gender equality.
Theirs and the stories of other LGBTQ folks are often left out of American textbooks, leaving us with a fractured image of ourselves in time. But, to steal from the title of Felice Picano’s seminal novel, we are people in history. Students deserve to see a complete story of who “we the people” really are.
Especially NOW.
History UnErased (HUE) is an education 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to ensuring that every student learns a full and inclusive history – and that the history reflects who we are more wholly as a complex and diverse nation. HUE is already making a profound impact in schools across the nation, equipping educators with the tools and training they need to teach LGBTQ-inclusive history. HUE has trained thousands of teachers in partner schools (nearly 3,000 schools in 18 states) who are now teaching LGBTQ-inclusive history and civics curriculum in their mainstream classes.
In November 2024, HUE launched a single-teacher license program to put the power in more teachers’ hands! As a result, curriculum is now being taught in 16 MORE states, including TX, AZ, NM, AL, GA, FL, TN, UT, SD, IN, LA, MO, MT, VA, NC, and WY. An individual license can be purchased for a teacher (friend or family member) or you can pay it forward and provide a scholarship. Go to www.unerased.org for more info.
So please, join us on April 5th to celebrate, learn, and explore supporting this important work to keep the needle moving forward. Please join us for an afternoon of community, celebration, and dancing to benefit History UnErased! We hope this bash provides you with a renewed spirit for the continued fight for equality!
Special guest, Danny Roberts of MTV’s “Real World – New Orleans” (Season 9) will be on hand to mingle and join in the celebration!
Your event ticket will include one drink from a limited menu, food, and an open cash bar. DJ Ronnie will be on deck spinning tunes, and for trivia lovers we’ll have a little “history mystery challenge” to learn about some folks who have paved the way. There will also be a prize giveaway for a few lucky winners too… Details to come!
This is a 21+ event. ID is required. Proceeds from your ticket purchase will go directly to History UnErased to support their work and mission.
A huge special thanks and hugs to the crew at 5801, especially Graham for helping to support this event!
