Project Silk is RECLAIMING its space in the Steel City ballroom scene and returns to you with our first Kiki ball: THE REBIRTH!
A Kiki Ball is an event that celebrates the LGBTQIA+ community through performance, fashion, and creativity. Kiki balls were inspired by the historical House/Ballroom community but are more accessible and less competitive for younger people. It is a safe space for all.
The Kiki scene originated in the New York house and ballroom scene as a space for queer youth of color who were often homeless and in need of HIV prevention services. Kiki balls center on the importance of community and performative expression and highlight LGBTQIA+ history. Participants may compete in categories such as walking runway or voguing. Kiki balls may include educational programming that highlights LGBTQIA+ history.
Due to our location’s limited capacity, we ask everyone attending to register by completing this form to secure your spot: https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx
This event is open to the community as a whole! However, participation is for the youth and young adults. Therefore, we ask that all participants are under the age of 30. We aim to create a safe space for the youth and show them that they have support. We are here to celebrate their freedom of expression.
