Then he realized he was gay and felt displaced from his own displaced family. Place Envy—his first book of essays after five acclaimed books of fiction—chronicles his quest for orientation in the world: as an agnostic Jew\, as a queer traveler and lover\, and as a writer who can tell or twist the truth. Yearning for a queer lineage\, he obsesses about an uncle who perished at Bergen-Belsen but then finds\, in his grandmother’s German hometown\, a more surprising legacy. He lives with a Pennsylvania Amish family; accompanies blind gay men on a Mexican cruise; plays jazz with Sun Ra\, the Afrofuturist who claimed to hail from Saturn; and pursues a clarifying love affair in Brazil. DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, June 11th\, Club Cafe will host a free\, 21+ screening of Derek Jarman’s seminal 1993 film\, BLUE.\nThe experimental film was released four months before Jarman lost his battle with AIDS. His illness left him partially blind in the final months of his life\, only able to see shades of blue. This 79-minute film visually consists of an unchanging blue screen\, accompanied by music and narration exploring illness\, death\, and life. \nThe screening will be held at the South Side music venue on June 11th\, with doors at 7pm and the film screening at 8pm. Local filmmaker Cullen J. Sanchez will host the screening. \nIn lieu of admission charges\, Club Cafe will be accepting donations for Allies Pittsburgh\, a local well-being center that provides HIV testing\, treatment\, and therapy to the community. Donations are not required; the screening is free to the public.
